Making LinkedIn Work For You

We’re the kind of digital recruitment agency that wants to share our expertise to help candidates everywhere. A lot of people don’t use LinkedIn to its full potential, so we want to show you how to make a LinkedIn profile that gets those job offers rolling in.


1. Always do your research

Don’t treat your LinkedIn profile like a Facebook page; it’s your online CV so think about the industry you’re targeting. Check out other profiles in your industry or find people with the kind of roles you’re looking for and get inspired. That doesn’t mean copy and paste their profile into your own! Note the key words and phrases they use, because you need to use them too.


2. A stunning profile

You’ve uploaded your most sensible profile picture (nothing from Malaga ‘04) and filled in your basic details – great! Now you need to get into the nitty gritty. List every job, internship and voluntary position you’ve had, add your skills in fine detail and always pick out detailed examples. It’s brilliant that you’ve worked with social media, but what exactly did you do? List the Twitter followers gained by exact number, the percentage traffic increased; we humans love statistics and they give your profile credibility.


3. Put yourself out there

Once your profile is complete, it’s easy to sit back and expect employers to be falling over themselves to hire you – only they won’t be. Identify influencers and recruiters in your field, connect with them and really engage with them. Regularly adding insightful comments to their posts shows them what you have to offer. Link up with old and new colleagues and never miss an opportunity to make new connections. That orang-utan conference you attended last week? Add the speakers and participants and make contact.


4. Be SEO savvy

It might sound obvious, but you need to identify keywords to make sure potential employers can find you. Chances are, recruiters are searching for specific skills and you need to work out the terms they use to ensure your profile comes up when they’re hunting for the perfect candidate. As before, browsing similar profiles to your own is great for this, but also scan online job boards for the specific terms being used. In recruitment, the difference between a ‘web developer’ and a ‘senior UX designer’ is huge.
